An Immersive Experience At Amc Southdale - 1409 Words

For as long as I can remember, I have always loved taking part in the cinematic experience. Every aspect of it, including purchasing my ticket, eating buttery popcorn, and watching every trailer before the film completely and totally encapsulates me to this very day. So, it should come as no surprise that at the ripe age of 21, I am currently working at AMC Southdale, a high-end movie theater in Edina, MN. There are certain perks that come with being an employee at AMC that benefit cinephiles such as myself exceptionally well, including free tickets to the movies. Sufficed to say, when March 11 came around and 10 Cloverfield Lane was released in theaters, I was more than ready to take advantage of my free pass to the movies and go see†¦show more content†¦After paying for two ICEES, my boyfriend and I went up to the theater’s second level and sat down in the VIP booth, a separate, boxed-off section of the auditorium with reclining seats. I eagerly settled in, anxiou sly and excitedly waiting to see how J.J. Abrams continued the anthology of his 2008 movie, Cloverfield, an alien-monster movie recorded â€Å"shaky-cam†style (he has been very ambiguous on how the films connect†¦always and forever keeping fans at bay). Even before the previews began, I was theorizing on whether or not there would be aliens, if John Goodman’s character was telling the truth about an attack, and what it was the woman saw outside the window. 200 WARNING: Minor spoilers ahead! 10 Cloverfield Lane was a highly anticipated film for J.J. Abrams fans once the well-kept secret of its existence was revealed (a characteristic the production company Bad Robot is known for) mere months before its debut. The tagline for the film, â€Å"Monsters come in many forms†, as well as the trailer were both very ambiguous in nature and left the viewers with several unanswered questions. It turns out, this was the perfect way to watch the movie, with very little knowledge about it. The film follows the story of Michelle, a fashion design student who, after running out on her fiancà ©e, is involved in a car crash and ends up in

Two Different Prospects for the Future Ray Bradburys and...

Ray Bradburys Fahrenheit 451 showed us a world in which people found it acceptable, even preferable, to remain ignorant about the state of their world and face the darker aspects of their own humanity. Margaret Atwoods The Handmaids Tale envisioned a theocratic government named Gilead that induced women into the servitude of military commanders for the purpose of procreation. In both of these bleak contemplations of the future, people are discouraged from and harshly punished for expressing any sort of dissent. Perspectives that do not align with the status quo are discouraged, perhaps even feared, and consequently censored. These authors purpose was perhaps not to foretell a future, but to examine parts of society that necessitated†¦show more content†¦Fire Captain Beatty explains this to protagonist and dissenter-in-the-making Guy Montag as a result of offense caused by books; â€Å"Colored people dont like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people dont feel good about Un cle Toms Cabin. Burn it. Someones written a book on tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the book. Serenity, Montag. Peace, Montag. Take your fight outside. Better yet, into the incinerator† (Bradbury 57). Books often demonstrated a darker aspect of society. This subversive form of expression was received poorly by the general public, and the government was happy to put regulations in place to keep such challenging pieces of literature out of the peoples’ line of sight. A bid to make people comfortable led to the eradication of a broad spectrum of expression. Bradbury shows us the result of this repression of thought and expression with his citys peoples affection for their interactive â€Å"parlor† television systems over facing difficult emotions, as can be experienced through literature, since Faber tells us that â€Å"books are to remind us what asses and fools we are† (Bradbury 82). Montag tries to get his wife Mildreds friend Mrs. Phelps to face the harsh reality of feeling emotions by reading a depressing poem,

English and International Integration free essay sample

International integration is a process by which countries remove barriers to trade freely and absorb new technology, new culture outside national borders. In the integration period, English is considered a bridge linking countries together. Nowadays, nearly 4 billion people all over the world use English as their first or second languages. Fluency in English has become an indispensable skill in the context of economic integration today. In my opinion, English not only helps you to extend the scope of communication but it also brings you many other benefits. Firstly, mastering English allows people to be kept informed of the latest news about fashion , sports, science or politics. For example; 80% of the Websites on the Internet in English and popular Newsletters on TV like BBC or CNN in English. You can update the newest fashion style of the week, the hottest news about a football match at the World Cup or the latest information of the upcoming Iphone. Secondly, English offers you great chances for career promotion. Thanks to the International integration, many foreign companies have invested in our countries. They also join Vietnamese companies to do business. So English competence is the priority for big companies to hire staffs as well as considering employees for higher positions. Although there’s no official statistics on the correlation between English proficiency and wages, it’s pretty clear that the oppotunities always open wider for English candidates. Therefore, learning English is very important in the age of integration .And I don’t hesitate to share some tips on English learning with you . 1. Spend at least one hour everyday listening to news or discussion programs such as CNN news or BBC news. Its hard to understand what they are saying when you first begin to listen to them, but gradually youll get used to the speed and tone. Then you can get a brief idea of what they are talking about, although you cant get all the details. 2. Watch some English TV and listen to some English radio. TV and radio are the best and most inexpensive teachers to learn real English. Not only you can learn formal English from  news or debate TV programs, but you can also learn everyday English from soap operas, cartoons or comedies. 3. Spend more than two hours every day on reading English news or articles. Reading builds up your vocabulary, idioms, phrases, and the concepts of English structures. If you do enough reading, it will save you a lot of time since you won’t need to spend more time on building your vocabulary or grammar. Read out loud when you do your reading to improve your pronunciation at the same time. 4. Make some pen pals or native-English friends and write to them at least once everyday. The best way to improve your writing is to practice writing as much as you can. The more you write the more you know how to use what youve learned from reading and listening. 5. Make friends with speakers. This is the most difficult task because of the difference in culture, but you cant really master English unless you can have good conversations with an American or Briton. Remember to ask a lot of questions to keep the conversation going. When someone asks you a question, give more than just basic information. For example, if someone asks you Do you like living here? dont just answer Yes or No, but tell them why, too. 6. Think in English. Getting used to using English all the time will make it easier to listen and react with it. Follow these small tips can make it easier for you to learn English. In conclusion, eventhough English has already played an important role in our lives since Viet Nam was a full member of the WTO. This, may somehow, affect Vietnamese. But to catch up with the speed of the world’s development, we need to take the risk, learning English as much as we can, and not forgetting to keep the beauty of Vietnamese.

Quit Smoking free essay sample

H phoned at the start of June 2012, requesting for help telling me that he did not seek treatment following our previous contact but used Niquitin patches bought from the local superstore combined with gums which he stopped due to adverse reactions having to see his G. P, who prescribed medications helping nicotine withdrawal symptoms and reducing tobacco cravings. He sounded more determined as he had left his job following complaints from staff, parents and children on the ward and his girl friend ending their relationship due to smoking related issues. I explained to H that to succeed, the onus is very much with him in that he should be firm and resolute in his intentions as well as being well motivated. . As I needed to write another case study, I offered to see him on 08/06/2012 at 15. 00hrs for an Initial Consultation-(Appendix 1), and one hypnosis session to help him quit smoking with his signed consents in place before treatment started. We will write a custom essay sample on Quit Smoking or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page He was eager to quit smoking with a motivational rating of 9/10. He attended for his appointment looking slightly anxious but ready for treatment to start. Welcoming him in, and on making sure he was comfortable in one of the 3 chairs directly opposite to mine he signed both consents(Appendix 2,3) after which I explained the Ground rules for Health and Safety reasons, the Confidential nature of the treatment, Respect of his Individuality, Preservation of Privacy and Dignity, Equal Opportunity and the Rights to stop treatment at anytime should he wish do so. I handed over one questionnaire of the I. C to him keeping another to   understanding of the questions. He was confident and honest with his answers making it easy for me to plan a wholly individual screed. Conclusion Smoking is so hard for some people to give up with the mind fighting desperately fearing loss of friends and status. . Hypnosis is not a miracle cure for smoking with each individual responding differently bringing about change deep in the subconscious mind because, often, the urge to smoke is felt at a deeper level – deeper than the conscious mind is aware of. Therefore the first part of therapy in this case study was aimed at correcting H’s habit- to Quit Smoking, and allowing him time to express himself post hypnosis after throwing away his cigarettes. Hypnosis works in breaking unhealthy associations which are reinforced by Healthier ones. I cannot predict H’s response after treatment but with his Positively charge energy, I did feel that he may be successful. Changing unhealthy to healthy behaviours take time but as a hypnotist for as long as we do our work honestly this is what matters. Psychology studies show if an existing behaviour is associated with a new physical behaviour, the old behaviour rapidly fades away, and the desire to do that behaviour fades away as well.
